Year-End Edition 2007 (1 – 2)

Party-Favorz-2007-%28Year-End[1]
It’s that time of year again; and what a rollercoaster year this has been; not just for me in my professional life or for Britney, Amy, Paris, Nicole & Lindsey, the flailing housing market, rising gas prices or even a sadistic administration that is the true access of evil; but more importantly club music. Every ten years or so, musical styles and tastes begin to evolve. Often times, pop music is nothing more than a reflection of decades past and a direct result of the social issues surrounding us at that time. We’ve witnessed how alternative music has reached back to the eighties for the “garage band” sound and are now seeing low tech electro-pop music come back into fashion as well. In fact, Erasure who never really changed their sound are now back in style; even if the masses didn’t gravitate to their superior and much under appreciated “Light At The End Of The World” album. More importantly, we are witnessing the comeback of (dare I say it) DISCO! Apparently that word remains a bit of a stigma in the minds of people; so the politically correct thing is to call it FUNK. Fine, whatever tickles your pickle, but at the end of the day, it’s still disco; just with a funkier edge. You don’t need to look any further than the remixes by some of my current heroes Moto Blanco, Freemasons, Seamus Haji and the to see the overwhelming acceptance on the dance floor, and I predict finally on radio in 2008.

We are also seeing the decline of this big room progressive sound in the way of Circuit music. While the deeper beats and darker sound will always be around, much of it is transforming itself into heavy electro. You can thank Jody Den Broeder and his ilk for that. While not my favorite producer, he has had a stellar coming out year, remixing many of the number ones that resided on Billboard’s dance chart. These changes often reflect the mood of the nation. Certainly being under attack and at war, living under the oppression of an arrogant regime has contributed heavily to the dark renderings of club music that had been so prevalent for the past several years. So much so, I almost gave it all up.

Fortunately, it’s these very changes I’ve been witnessing that have renewed my sense of belief in what club music is and always should be; That is to say that club songs are seemingly about nothing, “he said-she said”, “you done me wrong, so get your ass out the door”, “I’m so in love with you”…etc. Elvis Costello once said “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding?” Well, nothing really; and that is why that theme has been steadily appearing in club music as well.

For better or worse, the various genres of club music are here to stay, at least for now. We’ll see another evolution take place in another ten years or so. One thing that will always be a constant is that clubbing is all about frivolous fun. It’s an opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life. In the end, it’s all good.

With that being said, I bring you the first of my Party Favorz 2007 Year-End Editions; Mainstream Club. If you’re one of those that’s boogying till the peak of dawn, then this one’s for you! Download and burn this to CD for posterities sake. Ten years from now, you’ll be glad you did.

Enjoy!

>>>NO LONGER AVAILABLE<<<

Disc : 1/2

Track : 1
Title : And I’m Telling You (Richie Jones & Eric Kupper Club Mix)
Artist : Jennifer Hudson

After the success of “Dreamgirls” the former American Idol had great success with her rendering of this Jennifer Holliday classic. In fact, she gave her a serious run for her money.

Track : 2
Title : Like This (DJ Escape & T. Coluccio Main Mix)
Artist : Kelly Rowland feat. Eve

While not as wildly successful at radio as her former Destiny’s Child comrade, Kelly is holding her own. While it’s been duly noted that Kelly is not a big fan of club music, the circuit boys sure went crazy over this one.

Track : 3
Title : Make It Last (Ralphi Rosario Remix)
Artist : Dave Aude feat. Jessica Sutta

Apparently the Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta has more than one life. This year, she kept herself in the public eye with this floor scorcher and the dance radio favorite “White Lies” with Paul Van Dyk. Nicole who?

Track : 4
Title : Love Vibrations (DJ Escape & Johnny Vicious Main Mix)
Artist : Barbara Tucker

Ms. Tucker is back and badder than ever! This sizzling hot remix by Escape & Vicious really had the floors moving. Tons of remixes for this song. The discofied Georgie Porgie rendition appears on my year-end Deep & Funky mix.

Track : 5
Title : U Spin Me (Mike Cruz Vocal Mix)
Artist : Inaya Day

Inaya has been making some really smart choices lately. She’s been dipping into the 80′s back catalogue and giving these songs her diva-twist. From last year’s “Glamorous Life” and “Nasty Girl” to her take on Dead or Alive’s classic “You Spin Me Around (Like A Record)” she’s on fire!

Track : 6
Title : Everybody Dance (Tony Moran Original Mix)
Artist : Deborah Cox

Everybody love’s Deborah. What everyone failed to notice, is that the riff and chorus from this song is lifted from the disco classic “Everybody Dance” by Chic.

Track : 7
Title : Say It Right (Alexander & Mark Atlanta Mix)
Artist : Nelly Furtado

What a amazing song from Nelly. I’m really glad to see her back in fine form. Unfortunately, the mixes for this song were pretty much sh!t. Lifeless pieces of garbage that not only didn’t fit the song, but didn’t do any justice for this beautifully written masterpiece. Here’s the best of the bunch.

Track : 8
Title : Lovestoned /I Think She Knows (Tiesto Remix)
Artist : Justin Timberlake

Justin continues his streak with hot R&B flare! Several great remixes here including the hot Kaskade remix. I went with DJ Tiesto’s version this time around, because me thinks he still satisfies (even if it was a bit short).

Track : 9
Title : I Want Your Love (Soulcast Icon Mix)
Artist : Jody Watley

After her questionable remake of Madonna’s “Borderline” from last year, Jody’s come back with a remake of a Chic (yes another one) classic. Soulcast who are proving themselves to be a solid production team win the honors of the best mix for this song.

Track : 10
Title : Green Light (Freemasons Club Vox)
Artist : Beyonce

Ahh, Beyonce…you will never, ever be one of my favorites, but your choice to use Freemasons for last year’s “Ring The Alarm” and this song was dead on! Another friggin’ floor stomper that had us shaking our asses this year.

Track : 11
Title : Disrespectful (Paulo & Dutkevitch Creative Mix)
Artist : Chaka Khan feat. Mary J. Blige

I guess it took a little Mary to bring out the beotch in Chaka…and boy oh boy do these gals lay it down!

Track : 12
Title : Breakaway (Bill Bennett’s Anthem Club Mix)
Artist : Inaya Day vs. Bill Bennett

To be fair, this was NOT a huge hit this year. There was a limited number of discs that were released in the summer, but never a big push. Finally, it appeared on iTunes. I’m hoping it will be picked up in ’08. I got to tell you, if you haven’t heard this yet, it will rock your world! A remake of the “Big Pig” club classic from the eighties, Inaya and Bill really turn this one out!

Track : 13
Title : Defying Gravity (Tracy Young’s Flying Monkey’s Club Mix)
Artist : Idina Menzel

Taken for the musical “Wicked” also performed by the very talented Idina, this is the kind of song that boys always love to see remixed. With a plethora of remixes to choose from, I found myself for the first time really appreciating the work of Tracy Young. Watch out for the remixes of her new song “Gorgeous” Christmas day on iTunes. Gonna be big!

Track : 14
Title : Make It Happen (Mahjong Extended Vocal Mix)
Artist : Maya Azucena

Maya Azucena was one of those virtual unknowns until this song came out in the spring. Hopefully, the success of this song has brought her music to a larger audience. Writing most of her music, she has an amazing voice which suits her low-key acoustic driven songs. As this song proves, when she needs to propel herself into the divasphere, she can do it with the best. Mariah and Mary J. you’ve been given notice!

Track : 15
Title : Walk Away (Tony Moran & Warren Rigg Evolution Mix)
Artist : Kristine W

Supposedly this song was rejected for Whitney’s up and coming album. Kristine was all to happy to snap it up, because it suits her powerhouse voice just fine. The only problem I really had, was Tony’s production. Typical and over the top, his and the subsequent remixes never really captured the essence of the song. Fortunately, Kristine has a new album ready for ’08 and you can bet a whole slew of number ones will be coming from it. Pleeeez Kristine, finally release your take on the “The Boss”…I’ve ’bout pissed myself several times when I thought it was gonna finally arrive!

Disc : 2/2

Track : 1
Title : Deep Into Your Soul (Cube Guys Remix)
Artist : Friscia & Lamboy

Hot only got hotter when the Cube Guys remixed this song. Talk about funky!

Track : 2
Title : Gimme More (Junior Vasquez & Johnny Vicious Club Mix)
Artist : Britney Spears

Much has been written about Britney’s apparent meltdown this year. So instead of rehashing all the embarrassingly painful moments, I thought I’d offer some friendly advice instead. First, GIRRRL, you’ve got the best album of your career out right now, don’t F$%^ IT UP! Tour, and tour hard. Let your fans know you still care about them. Second, take a page from your pal Madonna’s handbook and hire a good nanny. Better yet, let Madge screen them for you and force a signed confidentiality agreement. If they talk about you in public, sue them for breach of contract and make sure they never work again! Third, life isn’t always a party. At some point, you need to grow up; now is that time. Read some parenting books or take some classes, just not from your lame ass mother. You have two beautiful children that would love to have their mother around when they grow up. Don’t let history teach them that you were an unfit parent. ‘Nuf said.

Track : 3
Title : Hold It, Don’t Drop It (Moto Blanco Club Remix)
Artist : Jennifer Lopez

Speaking of someone always in the public eye and who really new how to work it…It appears that our J Lo has now grown up. I guess it was time for the public to move on, cause no one really paid attention except in the clubs. Frankly, I thought the singles off her latest were stellar; the club mixes even more so. But, you know how it is, you grow up, get married several times and start making babies with hopefully the person you’ll spend the rest of your life with. In my book, you’ll always be Jenny From the Block. Good for you!

Track : 4
Title : Don’t Stop The Music (Jody Den Broeder Big Room Mix)
Artist : Rihanna

I know I said earlier I wasn’t particularly fond of JDB’s mixing, but this was off the chain! That Jacko hook was smart and right on the mark. By far, one of my favorites this year.

Track : 5
Title : Illegal (Johnny Vicious Roxy Mix)
Artist : Shakira

Shakira’s crossover success has been mixed at best. Frankly, I don’t think she translates as well in English as she does in Spanish. That is not to slight this song. In fact, it’s really quite good. Lyrically, smarter than most with a big room approach by Johnny Vicious gives it two big thumbs up.

Track : 6
Title : Just Sex (Eddie Baez Mix)
Artist : Billie Myers

Billie, where have you been all these years? Haven’t heard from you since “Kiss The Rain” back in the day. Now you come back and are talking all sorts of trash? Luv It!

Track : 7
Title : U + Ur Hand (Bimbo Jones Explicit Mix)
Artist : P!nk

Hooray for P!nk!!! Definitely the comeback kid of the year. I loved her last album, but it never hit with radio. Love this album as well, but for awhile, it didn’t look like much was going to happen after the semi-hit “Stupid Girls”. Thank God for dance radio. This song was #1 for a gillion weeks (unprecedented in dance radio; generally a very fickle market). While that exposure was largely the reason top 40 radio took a second look, it was her successful tour with our boy wonder Justin that pulled it all together. Girl, YOU ROCK!

Track : 8
Title : Hurt (Offer Nissim Mix)
Artist : Christina Aguilera

Released late last year, this was a massive hit on radio and in the clubs. The Chris Cox mix was simply divine and included in my “Holiday Edition” of 2006. The Offer mix was never officially released, but is so dark and yummy, I had to include it here.

Track : 9
Title : Que Hiciste (Tony Moran Remix)
Artist : Jennifer Lopez

This song got bumped off my “Pride Edition” mix this summer. There was so much out at the time, I just couldn’t make it work. So, I’m bringin’ it back for my year-end edition. Frankly, a solid performance by Jennifer and one of the best Tony mixes in a long while. You’ll notice the riff is lifted from Bandero’s “Guitarra” from several years back. Hot stuff!

Track : 10
Title : Step Into The Light (Wayne G & Andy Allder Circuit Mix)
Artist : Darren Hayes

Best mix of this song off of Darren’s new album “This Delicate Thing We’re Made Of”. Runner’s up goes to Moto Blanco, with Tony Moran in a distant third. Now OUT and living proud with his partner in the UK, we are pleased to call Darren one of our own.

Track : 11
Title : Keep Your Body Workin’ (Bassmonkeys Club Mix)
Artist : Tony Moran feat. Martha Wash

Still sitting in my “iPod Worthy Top Ten”, the Bassmonkeys funkdafied mix suits the powerhouse vocals of Martha Wash fabulously. Frankly, I just can’t get enough of this song. “Funk, funk, funky music, I got it…Music is my life”…’bout sums it up.

Track : 12
Title : I Need Someone (Cube Guys Remix)
Artist : Ralph Falcon

About every five years or so, Ralph comes out with a massive floorfiller. Last time around it was the awesome “Dark Beat”. Like it’s predecessor, “I Need Someone” uses a male vocal with minimal lyrics repeated over and over again built around a heavy hook. While this was a massive hit this year, I just wasn’t feelin’ it at all. If it wasn’t for the Cube Guys funkier rendition, which came out almost as an afterthought, I’d have no use for it.

Track : 13
Title : Umbrella (Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel Club Remix)
Artist : Rihanna

I like Rihanna, I really do. But this whole nasal thing that is sooo overused in R&B songs these days, has got to go. Simon Cowell was right when he pointed out that Chris Richardson was singing all nasal-y during one of his performances for American Idol last season. This is especially prevalent in the current crop of male R&B stars. Folks, this ain’ t singing, it’s just annoying. So, if I had to pick a remix for what otherwise would be a terrific song, Haji & Emanuel pooled it off.

Eh, Eh, Eh!

Track : 14
Title : Love Me Or Hate Me (Friscia & Lamboy Dirty Club Mix)
Artist : Lady Sovereign

Lady Sovereign is being hailed as the female version of Eminem. Well, I don’t know about that, but this song is something fierce! Rejected in the UK (her homeland), she was flown to New York to audition for Jay-Z and ultimately got signed to the Def Jam label. She rails against the booty shaking, booby squeezing, Prada de nada fake wannabe’s of rap. In short, she’s the real deal. “Love me or hate me that is the question…if you love me, thank you…if you hate me, F!@#$ YOU!”

Track : 15
Title : Automatic (Digital Dog Mix)
Artist : Ultra Nate

Kudos for Ultra Nate (pronounced Naa-Tay) for taking control of her career. No doubt, she read the writing on the wall and adjusted her image and sound accordingly. Automatic (a remake of the Pointer Sisters 80′s hit) was just the platform to showcase that adjustment. Accompanied by a sizzling hot video played in every gay video bar from east to west, assured her entrance into the Divas Hall Of Fame. Unfortunately, with all the mixes available for this song, the strongest was Digital Dog…and that, well, is what it is. Watch the video again and you’ll like it even more.
